Description Of Memoir '44

Memoir 44

Memoir '44 familiarizes its players with some of the most historic battles of World War II like Omaha Beach, Pegasus Bridge, Operation Cobra and the Ardennes. There are a total of 15 battle scenarios in Memoir '44. All the scenarios try to recreate the terrain, troop placements and objectives of each army. Players get Command cards and Tactic cards that enable them to deploy troops for a skirmish. Infantry, paratrooper, tank, artillery, and even resistance fighters are the various types of units available for players to deploy.

The rules of game play require the players to engage in strategic game play, timely dice rolling and an aggressive battle plan that will lead them to victory.

The game board for Memoir '44 is a beautifully painted, double-sided, large-hex game board. It is double sided with one side depicting countryside and the other a beach.
44 double sided Terrain hexes are also provided. The 144 detailed army miniatures - including historically accurate infantry, tanks and artillery represent Allied and German infantry, artillery and armor. The box also has 8 Custom Wooden dice that are to be used for resolving conflicts. 36 Obstacle pieces, 60 illustrated Command cards, counters for special forces, bridges, bunkers and medals; and a clear, well-illustrated rule and scenario book – all these equip the players to settle down for an absorbing game of Memoir '44.

Memoir ’44 is admirably suited for team play. The double sided game board and terrain pieces increase the number of times the game can be played in a different way.

The rules regarding each scenario specify the layout of terrain, placement of starting units, the historical basis for battle, number of command cards for each side, conditions for victory and any other special rules.

Once the game board is set up and starting command cards issued to both the sides, the game is ready to begin. Players can choose from any of these actions – play a command card, order units, move units, battle and redraw.

The game continues till the conditions laid down for victory in a scenario are fulfilled. A game of Memoir '44 can be played between two individual players and also between two teams. Where there is a team, team members get to control different sections of the board. The cards are held in common and the requirements of the situation determine which player uses a card that is drawn.

Another variant of game play is overlord play. For playing this variant of Memoir '44, multiple copies of the game are needed. Players are divided into teams with each team being headed by a Commander-in-chief. The Days of Wonder website provides detailed rules for this kind of play.

Review of Memoir '44

Memoir '44 has achieved a rare feat. It has actually combined fun and history. If all history lessons were made like Memoir '44, children would be experts in history! Memoir '44 is a war game based on the Allied campaign in Europe in the period 1944-45. Players actually manage to learn and remember historical facts without consciously trying to do so.

The game board of Memoir '44 is a treat for the eyes. The game mechanics are simple yet elegant. The unpredictable nature of the card play and dice play involved take away the seriousness of war. Memoir ‘44 promises a lot of fun and is a good game for introducing first timers to strategy games.

Even people, who normally do not like war games, feel drawn towards Memoir '44. It is the interesting scenarios and absorbing game play that draw people towards a game of Memoir ‘44.
