At each turn a player needs to decide which island to visit. Once all
the players have decided they reveal their decisions at the same time.
If more than one player ends up at the same island, a fight follows.
Combat is affected by strength of ship and canon fire which is decided
by dice rolls. Whoever succeeds in chasing off other pirates from the
island emerges the winner of the combat. Too long a combat damages the
ship, so players need to know when to quit and return to Pirate’s Cove
and claim compensation for fleeing combat.
Game play in Pirate's Cove involves a little bit of strategy, some bluff
and double guessing; lots of player interaction and an element of chance
in the form of dice rolls.
The booty that the game box of Pirate's Cove brings is a charming board
map of the Pirate's Cove waters, 7 cool pirate ship miniatures, 5 Pirate
Ship Mats, 5 Captain's Wheels, 5 Wooden Fame markers, 20 Strength
markers, 112 Illustrated cards, 44 Doubloons, 50 Treasure chests, 6
wooden dice that add an element of luck – both good and bad; a rules
booklet (after all there is honor among thieves too!); one summary card
and one Days of Wonder Online access number.
All the islands offer a lot of bounty in the form of fame, gold and
treasure to the players. Players can also buy upgrades for their ships.
These upgrades are available at different islands as components like
sail, canons, crew and hull. One island offers a pub where useful
strategy can be learnt and another island offers pirates a chance to
bury their treasure.
Review of Pirate's Cove
Pirate's Cove offers players a thrilling flight of fantasy. Thieving,
armed combat, bluffing and looting are a few of the adventures a
‘pirate’ playing Pirate's Cove indulges in.
Some parents may find the glorification of such activities in bad taste.
Children in the 10+ age group that plays Pirate's Cove are at an
impressionable age and may get a mixed message by the glory attached to
pirates. However, it has been seen that as long as basic values are set
and clear, children treat Pirate's Cove as good fun and nothing more.
The game mechanics involved in Pirate's Cove ensure that players have a
lot of fun. There is a good mixture of strategy, random chance and the
extra element of bluffing. Pirate's Cove promises a session of wholesome
fun for players. |
