Players of Pirates of the Spanish Main get to navigate stealthy pirate
ships, majestic Spanish galleons, and speedy British schooners. These
ships go through the Spanish Main and are supposed to collect as much
gold as they can during their voyage. Obstacles to their mission surface
in the form of enemy attacks.
The goal of a game of Pirates of the Spanish Main is to either collect
more gold than the opponents or sink all the opponents’ ships. One pack
is enough for playing a game. However, more packs give players more
models of ships to use. The rules of Pirates of the Spanish Main can be
used fully only when there are many ships to choose from. Each pack
gives players two constructible figures which may be a fort, a ship or a
monster. The ships may be Common, Uncommon, Rare, or Super Rare. Not
every pack contains a Rare ship.
Captain, Helmsman, Musketeer, Shipwright, Oarsman, Cannoneer and
Explorer are the generic crew provided with a pack of Pirates of the
Spanish Main. Some versions contain sets of ships and box sets. New
features like a Davy Jones' Curse box and a Revolution Holiday Box in
such packs give players more variety in the game play.
Pirates of the Crimson Coast, Pirates of the Spanish Main Unlimited,
Pirates of the Revolution, Pirates of the Barbary Coast, Pirates of the
South China Seas, Pirates of Davy Jones' Curse and Pirates of the
Mysterious Islands are a few expansions of the game that have been
released.
Several promo models of ships have been used to boost popularity of the
game.
Review of Pirates of the Spanish Main
Pirates of the Spanish Main is an innovative game and has the
distinction of being the world’s first constructible strategy game.
Players get a lot of exposure to ship types, ship speak and the like. On
the downside the game lets players loot and plunder. But as long as
players confine the looting and plundering to the game it is alright!
The game of Pirates of the Spanish Main is definitely interesting, but
keeping the ships intact poses a problem. Every time you sit down for a
game of Pirates of the Spanish Main a lot of preparation is needed to
put the ships together. However, the number of ship models waiting to be
collected compensates for all the trouble. Putting the ships together
enhances players’ puzzle solving skills too.
One part of the game mechanics involves giving away treasure to your
opponent. Younger players can really feel the pinch. Frayed tempers and
disappointments are to be expected in a game of Pirates of the Spanish
Main.
